During the Great Patriotic War many new awards were established - orders and medals. However, the symbols of victory over fascism were two: the Order of Victory, which was awarded the highest military leaders, and the Order of Patriotic War - the first order, established after its beginning. To see samples of the Order of Patriotic War, made in 1942, will be available at the exhibition "Signs of Victory" in the Russian money Museum.

The Order of the Patriotic War was established by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on May 20, 1942. It was the first Soviet order, which had two degrees. According to the statutes of the Order, it was awarded to soldiers and civilians who had especially proved themselves in the fight against the enemy. For the first time in the history of the Soviet awards system, the statute prescribed specific deeds for which the order was awarded.

Work on a new award on behalf of Stalin began April 10, 1942. It involved artists Dmitriev and Kuznetsov. Already two days after the beginning of the work, the artists prepared the first sketches. As a result, with some changes was approved sketch by Kuznetsov.

Orders of Patriotic War I and II degree have the same design, but differ in the material from which they were made. Signs are made in the form of a five-pointed star, in the center of which there is an image of a sickle and hammer, framed by the inscription "FEATURE WAR" on a white background. The star is located on a background of a pentagonal figure consisting of rays of gold or silver colour depending on degree. The order of the first - higher - the rays are gold, the order of the second degree - silver. Production of the orders of the Patriotic War began in Krasnokamsk, where the Leningrad Mint was evacuated at that time.

On June 2, 1942 the first awarding of the Order took place. Servicemen of the Artillery Division of the 13th Guards Rifle Division under the command of Captain Cricily became the first Knights of the Orders of I and II degree. In total, more than 1.2 million awards of this order were made during the war. In 1985, to the 40th anniversary of Victory, the Order of the Patriotic War was awarded to veterans. This action caused controversial responses, because according to the statute, the Order was awarded for specific feats on the battlefield. The total number of awarded the Order of Patriotic War of both degrees - 9.1 million.

In the collection of Goznak there are numerous samples of orders of I and II degrees. Samples made in Krasnokamsk during the war will be exhibited at the exhibition "Victory Signs", which will soon open in the House of Stock Capital of the Peter and Paul Fortress.
